Every once in a while, something comes along that I just can’t get off my mind. It could be a trend, a piece, a shade, an object, a song…Sometimes the smallest, most insignificant thing can dominate my brain. I like to compile lists of them every once in a while to remind myself of what once fed my creative spark.
Back when Illamasqua released their Quill nails, I was initially uncertain of the pointed-tip trend. They looked impractical, unwieldy, a little dangerous. Seeing the talons on celebrities like Gaga and Adele did absolutely nothing to change my mind. But reading through recent nail magazines and seeing them on the street, I think it’s safe to say I’m hooked.
An extreme shape like this tends to look most appealing when done in lighter, more natural colours with accented tips, but I’m still not sure I could pull it off. I may start filing my natural nails into more of a V and see how it goes from there. Like hair, nails grow back…
Perhaps it’s their bountiful reappearance at farm stands and grocery stores, but I can’t get enough. It isn’t enough to find ways to incorporate them into every possible meal, I need to smell like them. When I was 16, I wore an incredibly candy-sweet strawberry cream fragrance day in and day out. That scent was as much a part of me as my hair or my eyes or my left arm. It was the only scent I’ve ever been able to wear exclusively–I have to wonder if I would settle down, scent-wise, if I found a more mature version of that fragrance.
I have yet to find a designer fragrance that captures what I like about berries of any sort–most berry-based fragrances are a surefire migraine for me–but the best strawberry scent I’ve come across is an indie gem: Darling Clandestine’s Morderteile Kelah, which pairs strawberry jam with airy hyacinth and fresh milk, has lived in my purse for weeks now.
